Welcome to EssEff3D

3D printing is awesome and fun. I’m sure that you already know that, since you have stumbled upon this 3D printing blog. And since 3D printing things is such a good time, it makes me want to create amazing things. That is what this blog is about.

Here is my story in a nutshell. I am a software engineer and lover of technology. I got my first 3D printer about 4 months ago, a Printrbot Simple Metal. This was followed closely (perhaps too closely, but I’m not complaining) by my second printer, a Rostock Max V2. I’ve learned a lot in these past 4 months and printed a lot of random stuff.

About 2 weeks before Halloween, my wife found a poster for a dog costume contest at a local store. We decided to attend and found a Princess Leia costume for our dog. That led to the decision that we should dress up too. I went as a Jedi, and my wife was also Princess Leia. She got to work sewing our costumes, because she is amazing and talented like that. As for my contribution, you can’t have these costumes without a lightsaber and a blaster, so why not 3D print them?

We ended up placing 2nd in the costume contest and winning $100. This made us start thinking about next year already. We had fun with our costumes, but it was a bit rushed and we can do better. How are we going to top this year?

Link, Zelda, and Epona.

And here we are. This blog will focus on the 3D printing aspects of our costumes, at least for now. Don’t be surprised if we also dive into the process of sewing our costumes, and maybe we’ll dabble in some leather work. Who knows. Let’s find out.

There will be a lot of learning going on in this blog. If I do something stupid, don’t be surprised. I fully expect to do such things frequently, and I’ll do my best to share my screw-ups as well as my successes. As much as my ego will allow.

There are many items that we’ll be 3D printing for these costumes:

– Master Sword and scabbard
– Hylian Shield
– Bow of Light (I’m really excited about this one, it is going to be awesome)
– Zelda’s crown
– Zelda’s belt
– Zelda’s pauldrons
– A mini hookshot to hang from little Epona’s saddle

Sure, we could make these things out of foam or buy some of them online, but I think it will be much more fun to 3D print them instead.

The first item on our list is Link’s Master Sword. Stay tuned.
